6 Years with a Border Collie: My Honest Review

The Early Days 

When I first brought my Border Collie home, I was blown away by their energy and intelligence. From day one, they were eager to learn and always on the go. The early training days were intense but rewarding.

• Fast Learner: My Border Collie picked up commands quicker than any dog I’d ever owned. Basic commands like sit, stay, and fetch were mastered in just a few days.

The Active Years 

Living with a Border Collie is like having a workout partner. Six years in, my dog still has boundless energy. Here’s what daily life looks like:

• Exercise Routine: My Collie needs at least two hours of exercise per day. Whether it’s long walks, playing fetch, or agility training, they are always ready to go.
• Mental Stimulation: Physical exercise alone isn’t enough. I’ve had to get creative with puzzle toys, hide-and-seek games, and advanced tricks to keep their mind sharp.
• Herding Instincts: Even though we live in the city, my Collie’s herding instinct is still strong. This can manifest in trying to “herd” other animals, or even people, especially during play.

One of the greatest parts of owning a Border Collie is the bond that develops over time. After six years, my Collie feels more like a partner than a pet.

Health and Longevity 

Border Collies are generally a healthy breed, and I’ve been fortunate not to face major health issues. However, it’s important to be aware of potential breed-specific conditions.

• Joint Health: Given their active nature, keeping an eye on joint health is key. Regular vet visits and proper nutrition have kept my dog in great shape so far.
• Mental Health: A bored Border Collie is an unhappy Border Collie. Mental stimulation is just as crucial as physical exercise to prevent anxiety and destructive behavior.

Is a Border Collie Right for You?

After six years, I can confidently say that a Border Collie is an incredible companion—if you’re ready for the commitment. They’re smart, loyal, and full of energy, but they do require a lot of time, training, and exercise. If you’re an active person who loves a challenge and enjoys bonding with an intelligent dog, a Border Collie could be the perfect match.
